Concern Life Foundation donates tricycles to PWDs in Nadowli-Kaleo District

Concern Life Foundation, a youth led Non-governmental Organization, in partnership with the National Union of Ghana Students, (NUGS) and the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly, has donated tricycles to some Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Nadowli-Kaleo District in the Upper West Region.

The donation, which benefited ten PWDs, formed part of activities of Concern Life Foundation to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The foundation also provided skill training to over one hundred PWDs in the district in soap and cream making to help provide them with a trade through which they could earn a decent living.

Speaking at a brief ceremony to hand over the items at Nadowli, the Founder and Executive Director for Concern Life Foundation, Madam Lydia Alhassan noted that PWDs played a very crucial role in the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS). She said those goals could not be achieved without paying maximum attention to the needs of PWDs in the societies.

Madam Alhassan indicated that her foundation commemorated the International Day of Persons with Disability each year to put smile on the faces of PWDs and urged them not to look down upon themselves saying “disability is not inability”.

The President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Mr. Gombilla Sadiq Mohammed, noted that NUGS under his leadership was poised to supporting individuals and organizations to cause positive impact in society.

He therefore indicated that NUGS opted to partner the exercise as part of its Cooperate Social Responsibility (CSR) to the community.

Mr. Gombilla urged the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area to give priority to the interest and welfare of the vulnerable groups in society to ensure that they benefited from the district Assembly Common Fund which would enable them to earn a living.

“It is important that the three per cent of the Common Fund must be given to the Persons with Disabilities. It is the surest way of also showing our commitment to supporting them” he said.

For her part, the District Chief Executive for the Nadowli-Kaleo district, Madam Katherine Lankono urged the beneficiaries to put the equipment into good use for their own benefit.

She entreated them to desist from begging alms on the street and said the assembly had put in place measure to ensure the social and economic empowerment of persons living with disability.

“By the end of the year over hundred people with disability will benefit from the disability fund in the areas of education, income generation, farming, animal rearing and medical devices.

The district is therefore committed to using the disability fund to develop and fund the activities of persons living with disability in the district to ensure equal opportunity and social inclusiveness”, Madam Lankono said.

The beneficiaries of the tricycles commended Concern Life Foundation and its partners for the kind gesture and said it would bring a great relief to them in their daily activities.

December third each year is commemorated as International Day of Persons with Disability to promote the rights and wellbeing of PWDs in all spheres of life in the society.

It is to increase awareness about PWDs and their needs to survive in social, cultural, economic and political live and the need to break all barriers against the welfare of PWDs.
