Condom use promotes promiscuity - Most Rev Sarpong

Kumasi, Oct 27, GNA - Most Rev Peter Akwasi Sarpong, the Catholic Archbishop of Kumasi, has appealed to the government to review or halt advertisements of condoms since it was promoting promiscuity particularly among the youth.

He said instead of the youth being educated on abstaining from immorality, the advertisements were rather enticing them into it in the belief that condoms will safeguard them.

The result, Archbishop Sarpong said, was the increase in the spread of HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancies and prostitution. He was preaching at the thanksgiving service for the Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus Society to round off its three-day congress in Kumasi on Sunday.

The congress that had as its theme "Care for the Child" marked the 40th anniversary and the fourth congress of the society that brought together over 3,000 members from the archdiocese.

Most Rev Sarpong appealed to parents to give their children good training.

''That is why it is incumbent on parents to lead lives worthy of emulation not only by their children but other members of the society.'' Mrs Veronica Nancy Amevinyah, the President of the Society, said the aim of the society was to obtain and maintain personal sanctification and advancement in spiritual life by following the footsteps of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus.

Their aim, she said, was also to promote vocation and help in the sponsoring and maintenance of seminarians and aspirants to the seminary.
