Confusion galore in Ashanti NPP

Thu, 3 Dec 1998 Source: Ghana Palaver

As Pro-Akufo Addo forces accuse Kufuor's men, says the Ashanti Regional branch of the NPP is engulfed in a deep crisis following the victory of Mr. J. A. Kufuor at the October 24 Sunyani congress as the party's flagbearer.

According to the Palaver, Dr. R.W. Anane, MP for Bantama and Mr. Asante-Darko, Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP, who are known supporters of Mr. Kufuor, are at the centre of the fight. The paper says the two are allegedly targeting for the removal from the NPP, the executive members of the Bantama Constituency who declared their support for Nana Akufo Addo before the Sunyani Congress.

The Palaver says, in an apparent attempt to neutralise the action of Anane and Asante-Darko, the constituency executive has written to the NPP headquarters in Accra, calling for disciplinary measures against the two. GRi

The Ghana Palaver in another front page story reports that the entire assembly members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), have sued the "Ghanaian Chronicle", at a Kumasi High Court demanding 500 million cedis as compensation and general damages for viciously publishing falsehood against their Chief Executive, Nana Akwasi Agyeman.

The paper says the court action followed 'Ghanaian Chronicle's' publication in its November 20-22, 1998 issue with the banner, "Akwasi Agyeman linked to diversion of tyres," which the assembly members felt was a fabrication aimed at ridiculing the KMA boss in the eyes of the public. GRi
