Accra, May 13, GNA - The Greater Accra Regional Directorate of Controller and Accountant General's Department (CAGD) on Thursday presented items to the inmates of Dworwulu Special School in Accra. The items worth, GH¢1,000, included bags of rice, tubers of yam, cooking oil, a carton of milk, toilet rolls and washing powder.

Mr Samuel Ayittey Aryee, the Greater Accra Regional Director, CAGD, said the donation formed part of their social responsibility to society.

"Every regional directorate has been directed to select an institution for assistance after a meeting in Dodowa recently," he said.

He appealed to other institutions to assist the deprived in society since the government alone could not cater well for their needs.

Mr Thamba Gbesey, Assistant Headteacher of the School, commended the Directorate for the donation.

He cited inability to communicate effectively with the inmates and lack of adequate teaching aids as some of the challenges facing them and advised parents to bring their children with mental retardation to the School at an early age for training.

"Sometimes, the parents wait for a very long time before bringing their children which makes it very difficult for them to grasp easily what we teach them," he added.

Mr Gbesey advised pregnant women to take ante-natal care serious and avoid taking un-prescribed drugs as these had been identified as some of the causes of mental retardation amongst children.

"Women should avoid getting pregnant after 35 years since it also causes mental challenges amongst children," he added.

Mr Gbesey appealed to corporate organisations not to hesitate to call on the School for education on mental retardation.
