Nkawkaw (E/R), Dec. 25, GNA- A 33-year-old corn-mill operator who took to his heels just after the Nkawkaw Circuit Court had pronounced 12-months jail sentence on him for selling unwholesome meat to the public was given two years additional sentence for attempting to escape from lawful custody.
Kofi Takyi, pleaded guilty to selling unwholesome meat to the public and attempting to escape from lawful custody. Police Inspector John Padmore Arthur, told the court presided over Mr William Boampong, that on November 22, this year, the Asubone Police had information that the accused was offering some pork, suspected to be carcass for sale so they contacted the owner of the pig to find out the cause of the animal's death.
He said the owner informed them that the pig, which was pregnant died so the accused pleaded with her to give the carcass to him for consumption which she obliged.
The Prosecutor said Takyi prepared the carcass and rather started selling the meat to the public while he cooked some and sold it to public at his drinking bar and again offered part of the unwholesome meat for sale at Nkawkaw.
He said the accused was sentenced to a fine of 5 million cedis or in default, 12 months' imprisonment in hard labour.
Inspector Arthur said while the police were waiting for his warrant of conviction from the court officials, Takyi forced the handcuff opened and took to his heels but he later arrested.
