The Sekyere Kumawu District has embarked on an exercise to disinfect all vehicles in the area as part of efforts to contain further spread of the coronavirus disease.

The exercise, is being conducted in collaboration with the transport unions in the area, is aimed at protecting drivers and passengers from contracting and spreading the virus in communities.

Mr Samuel Addai Agyekum, District Chief Executive (DCE), speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the commencement of the exercise at Kumawu, said the gesture was to assure the public of their protection and safety as they commuted in and out of the district.

It was also to demonstrate government’s commitment to preventing the spread of the virus in the country.

The exercise, according to Mr. Agyekum, was focused on all vehicles whether commercial or private, entering or exiting through all routes in the district and formed part of the Assembly’s social services programme under its COVID-19 response fund utilization in the fight against the disease.

“Ensuring preventive measures such as social distancing, handwashing with soap, use of hand sanitizers, among others without disinfecting crucial environment such as vehicles, schools, churches, and others would be meaningless in the fight”, the DCE pointed out.

Mr Agyekum said hotels and health centers in the area were disinfected and the next step was to freely disinfect the churches and mosques.

Mr Inussah Issah, District Chairman of the GPRTU, commended the Assembly for the exercise and urged the drivers to cooperate with the taskforce in charge of the disinfection exercise to the success of the exercise.

He urged all persons in the area and beyond to observe all the preventive measures outlined by the government against the spread of the disease.
