Ms Pamela Takyiwaa, Public Relations Officer of MultiChoice Ghana Limited, has appealed to corporate institutions to assist in the education of children.

She said children were the future assets of the nation, therefore, in supporting their education they would become responsible adults who could take over from the older generation.

Ms Takyiwaa made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency when the Young Educators Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NGO), organized the Spelling Bee programme for 47 “Community Bee Spellers” at the Burma Camp Cluster of schools, at the Garrison Primary and Junior High School assembly hall.

In all 10 spellers qualified to participate in the Greater Accra Regional finals that would come off on October 2. Two hundred spellers are expected to take part in the regional finals.

MultiChoice, a fourth time partner, is sponsoring 10 schools in the Greater Accra Region, namely Air Force Basic, Airport Police ‘A and B’ Primary, Burma Camp Primary, Englebert, Flagstaff House Basic, Garrison Basic, Ghana Atomic Energy Commission Basic, Jack and Jill, Moabertha Academy and Services Basic.

Ms Takyiwaa said the company was committed to social initiatives geared at bridging the digital divide between the endowed schools and the less endowed ones.

It is also interested in growing the minds of the future generation by providing free educational content from “DStv Bouquets” for schools and learning institutions.

She said: “MultiChoice believes that this facility, which combines the sound and imagery of television, provides a rich resource for teaching and encourages better student understanding.

“Beyond MultiChoice’s success at providing quality entertainment, we are passionate about giving back to communities in which we operate. We have undertaken a number of corporate social responsibility initiatives, with education as our priority.”

Madam Eugenia Tachie Menson, Country Director of the Young Educators Foundation, said for students to master the English Language they should endeavour to read broadly, learn the spelling of words and pronunciations.

“By so doing you will have command over the language and that will go a long way in helping you overcome the challenges in your learning process,” she said.

Indomie Instant Noodles are the title sponsors of The Spelling Bee all over the 10 regions of the country with other partners – TYPE, Joy FM, Citi FM, Muscatella, Voltic, NADeF, Rufus, New Crystal Health and Graphic Communication Group Limited.

The Spelling Bee is a programme for primary children between the ages of eight and 13.

The Young Educators Foundation is a local NGO whose vision is to improve the lives of the youth through literacy, as well as to champion the cause of education.

“We strongly believe that education cannot be limited to only what is taught in the classroom; co-curricular activities have an important part to play in the total education of our children,” she said.

“Our programmes are meant to complement the school curriculum,” the Country Director, stressed.
