The Swedruman Council of Chiefs Sanitation Committee, has bonded 12 store operators who failed to participate in the national sanitation clean up exercise to be of good behaviour.

Nana Kwame Donkoh II, Chairman of the Committee and Gyasihene of Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council made this known to journalists, after the committee’s sitting last Thursday at Agona Swedru.

He said even though the store operators flouted sanitation bye-laws, the council decided to pardon them after consistent pleading for forgiveness.

Nana Donkoh who is also Swedru Mahodwehene said the council warned that the Council would deal drastically with future offenders.

According to the Chief, the Swedruman Council chiefs have taken serious view of the poor sanitation in the Agona West Municipality and pledged to help to improve it.

The council in this regard, would not take it kindly with people who would fail to participate in future exercises to ensure environmental cleanliness.

He called on the Assemblies to step up enforcement of their sanitation bye-laws, adding that many people have taken undue advantage to litter the street without fear.

Nana Donkoh expressed regret that filth has taken over the cities and urban areas, resulting in the outbreak of diseases like cholera and malaria.

He said past and present governments spend huge sums of money to improve sanitation, which have not achieved good results due to lack of attitudinal change of the people.

He called on the Environmental Health and Sanitation department of the Assemblies to intensify the “Saman –saman” (sanitary inspectors) work to help keep the environment tidy.

Nana Donkoh appealed to the Assembly members, opinion leaders, chiefs, and other stakeholders to rally behind the government in its efforts to improve sanitation.
