Couple initiates scholarship scheme for 18 students in Nkoranza

Nkoranza (B/A), July 30, GNA - Mr Bob Maram, an American and his wife, Mrs Inneke Bossman Maram, resident at Nkoranza in Brong Ahafo have launched a Scholarship Scheme for 18 selected students of Saint Theresa's Junior Secondary School in Nkoranza to undertake computer literacy training.

The couple, who are naturalized Ghanaians, said the selection of the beneficiaries was based on an examination conducted for students of the school out of which the 18 were outstanding. A total of nine million cedis will be spent on the students, with each paying a course fee of 500,000 cedis.

Presenting the scholarships to them, Mr Maram said the gesture was to assist the students to acquire the requisite skills to be able to face the challenges of the technological and computer age. He urged the students to take the training seriously and to respect their parents and teachers in order to attract their support.

Mr Kwabena Agyemang-Badu, District Director of Education, commended the couple for the gesture and said the District Directorate would also track the performance of the students to ensure that they take the course seriously. He lauded "the foresight" of the couple in initiating a school for mentally retarded children, leading to the establishment of Shalom Special School for the mentally handicapped at Nkoranza.

The District Director lauded the efforts of the teachers of the Saint Theresa's J.S.S. for assisting the students to perform well in all educational activities. Mr Bright Owusu, Headmaster of the School thanked Mr Maram for voluntarily teaching the students in English grammar. Mr Maram spent more than one million cedis to purchasing English textbooks for the school last year.

Mr Kwasi Owusu Sekyere, chairman of the school's Parent teacher Association (PTA) who presided, said the couple's gesture was the first of its kind in the area and said their names would forever remain in the history of the School. One of the beneficiaries, Miss Gloria Nyarko, on behalf of her colleagues wished the donors God's blessings and long lives.
