Nkawie (Ash), Aug 5, GNA - A 71-year-old farmer Opanin Abebrese and his 27-year-old daughter Akua Serwaa were on Monday granted bail in the sum of five million cedis each on a charge of causing harm to Nana Oppong Wadee, Esaasehene.

They were remanded in prison custody for one week when they first appeared before the Atwima District court last week. Father and daughter pleaded not guilty and will re-appear on August 11.

Police Chief Inspector A.K. Fenaloh told the court that there is a chieftaincy dispute between Nana Wadee, the present chief of Esaase, the kingmakers and Nana Nkrumah Boateng the ex-chief of the town. He said on June 12 there was a funeral in the town and Nana Wadee went there with his elders.

Inspector Fenaloh said the former chief also went to the funeral later under an umbrella.

He said followers of Nana Wadee ordered the former chief to fold his umbrella and this led to misunderstanding between the followers of both factions.

Inspector Fenaloh said Opanin Abebrese, a supporter of the former chief, slashed Nana Wadee with a knife and his daughter Serwaa also hit the chief with it.
