Sekondi, Jan. 5, GNA - A Sekondi District Magistrate Court on Monday sentenced Kenneth Ackon, a student resident at Kwesimintsim, to 12 months' imprisonment in hard labour concurrently for resisting arrest and for assaulting a public officer.
The court also fined the accused 500,000 cedis for assault and ordered him to pay a compensation of 500,000 cedis to the complainant, Deborah Donkor.
The accused, who pleaded guilty to the charges, would go to jail for 12 months in hard labour if he fails to pay the fine and compensate his victim.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Joe Hedidor, said Ackon and Deborah Donkor lived in the same house at Bankyease, Kwesimintsim. He said Ackon proposed love to Donkor several times but each time, the proposal was rejected.
Inspector Hedidor said at about 1630 on December 29 last year, the accused asked Donkor to fetch him something from his room but she refused.
He said Ackon became peeved and subjected her to severe beatings resulting in injuries.
He said Donkor reported the matter to the Kwesimintsim Police who sent personnel to arrest him but he resisted arrest and assaulted the police officer.
Inspector Hedidor said Ackon was subdued, arrested and sent to Kwesimintsim Police Station.
Inspector Hedidor said during interrogation, the accused admitted the offences.
