Court remands Constable for defilement

Techiman (B/A) April 5, GNA - The Techiman Circuit Court has remanded police Constable Ranson Kofi Nsiah, into prison custody for allegedly defiling a 15-year old JSS student.

Nsiah, stationed at Techiman, pleaded not guilty to the charge and will re-appear before the court on Wednesday, April 7.

A Sunyani-based legal practitioner, Mr. Tuah Yeboah, represented him. Presenting the facts of the case, Police Chief Inspector Sampson Y. Jebuni told the court, presided over by Mr. Erasmus Gyinae that on January 19 this year, Nsiah, a co-tenant asked the victim's mother to allow her daughter to sleep with his 11-year-old daughter as he was on night duty. Chief Inspector Jebuni said at about 11.50 pm the victim and Nsiah's daughter retired into the room and as the girl was doing her homework, the policeman returned, ostensibly "to pick something from the room".

Consequently, the victim wanted to wake the accused's daughter up but Nsiah asked her not to so since he would soon leave.

Chief Jebuni said later as the victim lay on the sofa the accused stripped naked, put off the light in the room and forcibly had sex with her. The victim attempted to leave after the act but Nsiah locked the door and took the keys away until the following morning when he returned to open it.

She reported her ordeal to the mother who reported the incident at the Techiman Police Station but Nsiah absconded.

Chief Inspector Jebuni said he was apprehended on March 3 after a Magistrate Court at Tuobodom had issued a warrant for his arrest following his failure to appear before it.

Mr. Gyinae said the circumstances of the case were such that the accused could be considered for a bail but his behaviour warranted being remanded into prison custody.
