Kwaku Manu, aged 43 and a native of Amantin near Obuasi and believed to be one of the armed gang who raided Kimexcom Company in Kumasi last year and made away with 19 million cedis and other vital documents, had been remanded in prison custody by a Kumasi circuit court.

Manu, whose plea was not taken, will re-appear on January 30

Police Constable Godwin Twumasi and five of the armed gang were killed in the gun battle that ensued between the police and the robbers but Manu managed to escape.

Police Chief Inspector Fabian Kwaku Afesi told the court, presided over by Mr Justice Ernest Yao Obimpeh that armed robbers numbering about nine raided Kimexcom Company last year and made away with 19 million cedis cash and other vital documents.

He said the robbers, who were using a pick-up were unlucky as the incident was immediately relayed to the police who gave them a hot chase.

Chief Inspector Afesi said in the course of the pursuit, the robbers sensing danger, started shooting indiscriminately and this resulted in the exchange of fire.

He said in the heat of the exchanges, Police Constable Twumasi of the Buffalo Unit was shot resulting in his death and the police also shot dead five of the robbers.

Chief Inspector Afesi said the remaining robbers managed to escape but were later arrested at various locations except Manu who hid in the bush and later left for Amantin, his hometown to visit his brother.

He said Manu later went to Aboaso in the Kwabre District but some residents of the town became suspicious because of his multiple wounds and therefore hinted the police who detailed the Buffalo Unit and plain-clothes men to survey the area and this led to his arrest.

The prosecutor said upon interrogation, Manu confessed to having been involved in the armed robbery.
