Court remands two in custody for murder

Mampong (Ash), Sept 28, GNA - A timely tip off enabled the Asante-Mampong Police to arrest a family of four for complicity, concealing a murder and murder.

They are Asare Opoku, 29, a corn miller, Elijah Boateng alias Papa Yaw, a taxi driver, Adwoa Konadu, their sister and Abena Konadu, mother of the three.

The four were on Friday arraigned before the Mampong District Court where Opoku and Boateng were remanded in police custody after their pleas.

Abena Konadu and Adwoa Konadu were, however, granted five million cedis bail each with a surety to be justified. They will re-appear on October 6.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency, Chief Superintendent of Police Kwaku Ayesu Opare-Addo, the Mampong Divisional Police Commander, said Rose Amankwah, the deceased who was a citizen of Mampong, was married to Opoku for the past 10 years.

The couple lived at Atonsu a suburb of Kumasi with their two children.

He said a quarrel ensued between the couple leading to the deceased parking her things from the matrimonial home. Chief Superintendent Opare-Addo said the deceased later visited her husband and found him with another woman and this resulted in a scuffle between her and the husband.

He said the deceased again visited her husband on September 2, this year at about 10.30 PM and while there the same woman came and invited her husband out but she tried to restrain him from going. The Divisional Commander said Opoku took offence and beat Rose Amankwah until she became weak and then locked her up in the room and left with his girlfriend.

Chief Superintendent Opare-Addo said Abena Konadu, the mother of Opoku who heard the deceased screaming in the room and around 11 PM, the victim shouted for help, which attracted neighbours to the scene. He said when the door was forced open Rose was found naked on the floor unconscious and was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The Divisional Commander said while she was being rushed to the hospital in the taxi driven by Papa Yaw, he stopped and picked Opoku who was standing with the girlfriend at the Atonsu market about a few metres from his house.

He said the deceased was pronounced dead on arrival at KATH but the people refused to report the incident to the Police. Chief Superintendent Opare-Addo said, however, that following a tip-off Police investigated the case and the culprits were arrested and the body transferred from KATH to the Mampong District Hospital.
