Crops Research Institute schools farmers on tubers

The Crops Research Institute (CRI) in Kumasi has organized a workshop on the production of roots and tubers for farmers in the Techiman Municipality, at Techiman.

It was sponsored by the West Africa Agricultural Productivity Project (WAAPP), to educate the participants on the challenges in the production of roots and tubers to increase production.

Mr Jonas Osei-Adu, a Research Officer at the Institute, said cocoyam, sweet potato, cassava, and yam were selected for increased production, while Techiman was selected in view of the large-scale production of yams and cassava.

He stated that the workshop would assist to solve the numerous challenges facing farmers in the production of yam and cassava in the area.

Mr. James Mahama, Acting Techiman Municipal Director of MOFA, advised farmers to take advantage of information technology in farming and patronize the use of organic compost on food crops production to increase yield.

The participants expressed appreciation for the workshop and expressed the hope that the government would address their challenges and assist women farmers with financial assistance in the production of yams.
