Curfew imposed on Alavanyo, Nkonya townships and their environs renewed

The curfew imposed on Alavanyo and Nkonya townships and their surrounding areas in the Oti Region has been renewed.

The Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, renewed this curfew by executive instrument.

The curfew hours are from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., effective Sunday, May 12, 2024.

The curfew was initially imposed on Sunday, June 18, 2023, by the then Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, following renewed clashes between the two communities that resulted in fatalities.

"The government continues to express its appreciation to the Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and people of the area for their efforts in ensuring peace and urges them to use the established mechanisms for resolving all their conflicts and disputes," stated the announcement regarding the curfew's renewal.

The statement also reiterated that there is a ban on all individuals in the two towns and their environs from carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons.

According to the statement, anyone found in possession of such items will be arrested and prosecuted.

The Minister for the Interior has, by Executive Instrument, renewed the curfew hours imposed on Alavanyo and Nkonya Townships and their environs in the Oti Region from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., effective Sunday, May 12, 2024.

The government continues to express its appreciation to the Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and people of the area for their efforts in ensuring peace in the area and urges them to use the established mechanisms for the resolution of all their conflicts and disputes.

Meanwhile, the government would like to reiterate that there is a ban on all persons in the two towns and their environs from carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons, and any person found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
