Mankranso (Ash), Jan 3, GNA - Mr. Kwaku Obeng Boateng, Ahafo-Ano South District Chief Executive, has lauded the increase in the assembly's revenue generation but said there was still room for improvement.
He said out of the targeted revenue of 666.6 million cedis for the year, the assembly collected 490.2 million cedis as at the end of November last year.
Addressing the third meeting of the assembly at Mankranso, Mr Boateng attributed the problem of revenue collection in the district to the lack of qualified personnel in spite of the feasible strategies adopted by the assembly to improve upon its revenue generation. Most of the revenue collectors are illiterate, while some of the communities are without revenue collectors, the DCE pointed out. Mr Boateng therefore, made a passionate appeal to the assembly members to recommend honest and qualified people, preferably senior secondary school leavers or "O" level holders in the communities to be appointed as commission collectors.
On education, the DCE expressed regret that in spite of strenuous efforts to raise the standard of education in the district with the provision of infrastructure and other materials, the standard kept on falling and said this was seen in the 109th position of the district in the recent ratings of all the 110 districts published recently. Mr Boateng said the assembly was sponsoring two nurses at the Sunyani Community Health Nursing Training School at the cost of 2.5 million cedis each per annum for two years.
The assembly, he said, also contributed 25 million cedis towards the national immunisation exercise and the Roll Back Malaria programme last year.
Mr Stephen Kwaku Balado Manu, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ahafo-Ano South, called for a clean political campaign for this year's elections.
He said the situation where politicians mounted platforms to insult and malign their political opponents should be a thing of the past and said the campaigns should centre on issues and not on personalities.
Mr. Balado Manu asked the people to embrace the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by contributing the premium that would be arrived at by the assembly.
