Yamfo (B/A), Mar. 9, GNA - Educational items worth more than 33 million cedis donated by the British Department for International Development (DFID), were at the weekend presented to about 200 brilliant but needy primary school pupils in Yamfo circuit in Tano North district of Brong Ahafo.

The items included school uniforms, school bags, assorted shoes, exercise books, pens and pencils.

The beneficiary schools were Assen Presbyterian Primary, Asempaneye-Koope A.M.E. Zion and Tano-Ano Local Authority Primary. Presenting the items on behalf of the NGO, Mr Frank Oscar Awuah, Assistant Director in-charge of Manpower in Tano South, commended the donors for the assistance and expressed the hope that the gesture would motivate enrolment.

He advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the items and to be punctual and regular at school.

Ms. Veronica Essuman Nelson, Tano District director of education, advised parents to send their children of school-going age, especially the girls to school.

She emphasized that the government's free compulsory universal basic education programme would be meaningless if parents allowed their children of school-going age to stay at home.

Ms. Nelson called on parents to take good care of their children and to provide them with their needs, expressing regret that "some of them even fail to feed their children before they go to school, let alone providing them with decent school uniforms".
