Kpando-Torkor, June 28, GNA - The International Department of the Italian Trades Union is assisting the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of the TUC with 5,000 Euros to undertake a number of projects at Kpando-Torkor under GAWU's Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development (SARD) Programme.

The projects include non-formal education/ training, income generating activities, group enterprise promotion, credit, transfer of improved technology, provision of good drinking water and better boat transport services for the haulage of agricultural produce of communities along the Volta Lake.

Mr Andrews Tagoe, Head of SARD, SAID this at the launch of a film project on "Child Labour and Slavery" at Kpando-Torkor on Monday. The film, sponsored by the Danish Trades Union, highlighted the trauma and deprivation children suffer in poor communities. Mrs Marianne Holst, African representative of the Danish Trades Union, said the film was a medium of portraying to the Danish people how some children in Ghana lacked the conditions to grow and live normal lives and to appeal to the Ghanaian public to give children the chance and opportunities to grow into useful and responsible citizens.

Togbe Adom Drayi, II, Head of Organisation Department of the TUC, advised the residents of Kpando-Tokor to desist from child slavery and to help the police apprehend those involved in the practice. "Such children should be sent to school for proper training so that they can become useful to themselves and the society at large", he said.
