Mampong Akwapim, Oct. 10, GNA- Mrs Agnes Akakpo, Headmistress of the Demonstration School of the Deaf at Mampong Akwapim, on Wednesday said the current situation where pupils and students of the institute write the same examinations as the able bodied was not the best. She therefore appealed to the educational authorities to allow children of the institute to write separate examinations under conditions conducive to their circumstances in order to bring out the best in them.
Mrs Akakpo made the appeal when the Eastern Regional Branch of the Ghana Post Company in Koforidua presented a number of items to the school in commemoration of the celebration of World Post Day. The items valued at more than five hundred Ghana cedis, included bags of rice, provisions and toiletries.
Mrs Akakpo said it was not fair that "our children will write the same examination with normal children" adding that persons with disabilities should not be put on the same level with able bodied children so far as education was concerned.
She expressed worry about the attitude of some parents who dump their children in the school and would not even bother to call once to check their progress.
The headmistress said teachers in the school were working under difficult conditions, but were trying their best to ensure the children were given good education.
Mrs Akakpo complained about the large number of about 30 pupils in a class, saying that, the ideal number should be five children to a class.
Mrs Esther Debra-Sarpong, Regional Head, Ghana Post Company who presented the items said the gesture was part of their social responsibility. She assured the authorities of the school of the preparedness of the company to donate more items to them on regular basis to enhance teaching and learning. 10 Oct. 07
