Democracy must not be limited to elections – DCE

The District Chief Executive for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, Mr Peter Light Koomson, has appealed to Ghanaians not to see democracy as an event confined to elections alone but must be seen as an active process which enables each and everyone to participate in decision making at all levels of government.

Mr Koomson said this at a parade of school children and voluntary organisations to mark Ghana’s 55th independence anniversary held at the University of Education Winneba-Ajumako Campus Park at Ajumako.

It was on the theme; “Sustaining Peace and Democracy for National Unity and Development.”

He described the theme as apt and most appropriate in view of the upcoming general elections and said one of the biggest challenges in Ghana was how to maintain peace and consolidate it to deepen democracy.

He urged all social and political groups to carry out their activities in the run-up to the December elections peacefully devoid of violence or verbal assault.

“We cannot afford to plunge this country into chaos just because we want to retain power or we want to come to power,” he said.

Mr Koomson called on Ghanaians to reject any political leader who used vituperative language, violent effusions, insult-infested messages and inciting people in his or her political campaigns.
