Department of Social Welfare calls for more resources for destitute

Koforidua, July 21, GNA- Mrs Lucy Ofori -Agyemang, New Juaben Municipal Director of the Department of Social Welfare, has expressed concern about the poor resource base of the Department, which was negatively affecting its ability to fulfil its mandate to society. She has therefore made a passionate appeal to government, to provide resources to her Department to enable it function effectively. Mrs Ofori Agyemang expressed the concerned, when Friends Choice Co-operative Traders Society Limited of Koforidua, donated items valued at 200 GH Cedis and 40 GH Cedis cash, to the Department, to enable it take care of two aged destitute in the Koforidua Municipality. The items included a bar soap, powder, toilet rolls, provisions, a bag of rice and used clothings.

Mrs Ofori Agyemang, who received the items on behalf of the destitute thanked the group for their kind gesture and urged other organizations and groups to emulate the example and come to their aid. She said with the support, her Department would soon send the two men to the Bekwai Infirmary for Destitute.

Mrs Ofori- Agyemang said since she took office, six people had already been sent to the Infirmary, adding that, there were many of such people on the streets who should be sent there, but lack of resources restrain the Department form doing so. Making the Presentation, Mr Williams Opoku, Chairman of the group, said the two aged men had been sleeping at the Koforidua Community Centre, venue for their group meetings for more than a year. He said the group was touched by the plight of the two aged men and decided to come to their aid, through the Department of Social Welfare, as part of their social responsibility.
