Tepa (Ash), Nov 2, GNA - Participants at a school management and supervision workshop have called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to detach headteachers from classroom teaching.

This, they said, will enable the headteachers to concentrate on the management and supervision of schools effectively.

They contended that the present situation where headteachers combined management and supervision with teaching left them with very little or no time for these vital aspects of education.

The two-day workshop was organised by the Ahafo-Ano North district education office in collaboration with the Quality Improvement in Primary Schools (QUIPS) of USAID for 20 headteachers and five circuit supervisors drawn from selected schools at Tepa.

It was aimed at improving upon the managerial and supervisory roles of the headteachers of the QUIPS grant to selected schools.

The participants appealed for office and residential accommodation, motor bikes and appropriate logistics for circuit supervisors to improve upon supervision at the circuit level. Mr Kwaku Aboagye Sarpong, the district training officer, said for headteachers and circuit supervisors to achieve the aims and objectives of basic education in the country, they had to improve upon their professional skills to be responsive to the challenges in the education system.

He asked headteachers to co-operate with their subordinates teachers, pupils, parents and School Management Committees (SMCs) to ensure discipline and qualitative teaching and learning in their schools.
