Accra, Nov 13, GNA - Detractors of the government and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are behind the heaps of refuse in corners and streets in the Central Business District of Accra especially in the Kantamanto Market area.

The Odododiodioo Women's Organizer of the NDC, Ms Mavis Manugbor, addressing a meeting of the Kantamanto Branch of the NDC in Accra, said the "the heaps of refuse and the sanitation problems in the Kantamanto and Railways areas is the work of detractors of the NDC to score cheap political points".

She said they were behind the activities of the "kaya bola" refuse carriers for a fee, who dump garbage and waste from stores and other locations indiscriminately to discredit the government for not being able to handle waste management in the city. Ms Manugbor said the government through the Accra Metropolitan Assembly will not relent in the effort to ensure a clean and healthy environment and called for the support of the people.

The Odododiodioo NDC Women's Organizer was reacting to a comment by the Chairman of the Kantamanto Branch of the Party, Mr Kwodwo Oppong Brako, about the level of sanitation and refuse, in the area in-spite-of the fact that traders were levied in his welcome. Mr Oppong Brako also expressed concern about security and called for better relations with the Railway, Accra District and Regional Police Commands. Alhaji Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, Vice Chairman called on the constituency executives to involve the branch more in their activities. He said the branch was inaugurated in 1992 and had many supporters who could not identify with the party for fear of intimidation. Mr Osman Latif, a Constituency Executive, encouraged them to remain steadfast in their support for the NDC and said the Party was investing in people by creating jobs for businesses to thrive. The Constituency Chairman, Mr Daniel Okai commended them for their commitment to the party and promised to ensure that their concerns were addressed.

He emphasised the national character of the NDC and said: "We are one family under one umbrella" and urged them to rally solidly behind the government of President Atta Mills, who is "God fearing and father to all" Mr Okai called on them to start preparing for the 2012 elections to enable the NDC to retain power. 13 Nov.10
