District Assembly provides working tools

Wenchi B/A, Dec. 18, GNA - The Wenchi district assembly has spent more than 50 million cedis in providing working tools towards income-generating ventures being undertaken by 20 selected physically challenged persons in some communities.

The beneficiaries, made up of carpenters, tailors, dressmakers, cobblers, kenkey producers, fishmongers, wireless repairers and space-to-space network recipients received cash and other working tools ranging from 500,000 to three million cedis.

Madam Ibrahim Bintu Farizana, District Chief Executive, who made the presentation said government had much concern for the welfare of the disabled in society in order that they would not feel dejected in life.

She said it was upon such good intentions of the government that the district assembly provided such support for the beneficiaries to enable them to improve upon their living conditions.

Madam Farizana said the assembly would continue to offer such assistance to other people with similar challenges to relieve them of their problems.

He stressed the need for the leadership of the association of disabled to educate their members to involve themselves in income-generating activities.

Mr. Daniel Bontobo, Brong-Ahafo regional Chairman of the association of the blind urged his colleagues to desist from begging for alms alongside the streets because such practice gives other people the chance to look down upon them.

He reminded them that it was against the constitution for people to beg for alms and quoted Act 75 of the constitution to buttress his statement.

Mr. Bontobo commended the authorities of the assembly for considering the plight of the people with disabilities. Nana Kumanin Kesse, Tufohene of Wenchi traditional council, who presided, praised the District Chief Executive for arranging the laudable plans for the upkeep of the disabled.
