Bolgatanga, Dec. 22, GNA - The Anglican Bishop of the Tamale Diocese, The Right Reverend Emmanuel Anyinda Arongo at the weekend expressed regret at the way some Pastors are interpreting the Bible to exploit their congregations, especially during Christmas festivities. He said the actions and inactions of these Pastors have distorted the true meaning of Christmas and given a different interpretation to indicate that Christians could enjoy themselves to the fullest during Christmas festivities, irrespective of the consequences.
"It does not make any sense if we paint a beautiful scenario about Christmas to urge people to use all available channels to get money, whether legitimate or otherwise, only to find themselves in situations they would forever regret."
He said memories of the birth of Christ bring joy naturally, but that the key requirement for the celebration of Christmas is for every Christian to engage in sober reflection on the activities within the year and to assess the level of improvement and shortcomings in their lives.
The Bishop was preaching at the Saint Cyprian's Anglican Church in Bolgatanga to mark the end of Epiphany, to usher in activities to mark the celebration of Christmas.
Bishop Arongo said the celebration should look ordinary. "If it is T.Z. that you can afford, which is cheaper, please, prepare it. Don't borrow monies to enjoy if you can't pay back."
He cautioned the congregation against drunkenness during the Christmas festivities and said: "Boozing your head off does not mean enjoyment. What makes sense is your ability to meet friends and plan together how to develop your spiritual lives in the coming year."
