Don't use children as farm hands

Mr Benjamin Kpodo, the Member of Parliament for Ho Central, has advised residents of Fiakonya, a farming community in the Shai-Osudoku District not to use their children as farm hands at the expense of their education.

Mr Kpodo, who is also the President of the Rotary Club of Achimota-Accra, said even though some parents find it cheaper to use their children as farm hands instead of adult labourers, there was the need for them to see education as a priority and key to the development of the community.

He gave the advice when the Rotary Club handed over a three-unit class room block it funded and constructed to the Shai-Osudoku District Assembly (SODA) recently at Fiankonya.

The GH¢ 100,000 classroom block, which has other facilities such as a library, a staff common room and a storeroom, is expected to serve more than 14 satellite communities in the area.

The facility, which would serve as the Junior High School block would save pupils the long and tiring treks to Dodowa and its environs to school. The MP said educating the children is the most effective way of shaping the human resources of the area for community and national development.

Mr Kpodo also entreated the pupils to make good use of the school facility by studying hard and maintaining it. He said the construction of the facility forms part of Rotary Club’s aim to promote literacy in deprived communities.

Mr Emmanuel Aymin Odoi Lartey, District Chief Executive of Shai-Osudoku, in a speech read on his behalf, thanked the club for the gesture, noting that; inadequate educational infrastructure has been a major challenge for the Assembly
