Mr Gordon Asubonteng, Dormaa Central Municipal Chief Executive at the weekend warned illegal miners (galamsey operators) in the Municipality to halt their activities to avoid the wrath of the Municipal Security Council.
He appealed to prospective mining companies who wish to invest or operate in the Municipality to follow the due process to obtain license from the relevant bodies before beginning their operations.
Mr Asubonteng gave the warning during the Municipal commemoration of the 30th National Farmers’ Day Celebration at Abonsrakrom in the Municipality.
He observed that “the Dormaa enclave which was cited as an example of clean, safe environment is being invaded by illegal miners.”
Mr Asubonteng attributed the activities of the ‘illegal miners’ to greed and selfishness by some unscrupulous characters including chiefs who connived with the miners whose activities destroy the environment, on which many of the inhabitants depend on for farming as a source of livelihood.
A 52-year-old farmer, Barimah Okogyeatuo Agyemang, Chief of Aboabo Number Four, and the Adontehene of Dormaa, was adjudged the best Municipal farmer for 2014.
His prize included a motorbike, cutlasses, Wellington boots and a certificate.
Twenty-two others including the second and third Municipal best farmers were given various prizes for their achievements.
