Dr Nduom Schools Kumasi On Public Sector Reforms

The Minister in charge of Public sector Reform Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom has stated that the incidence of fear, indiscipline, poor working conditions, low remuneration and excessive politicization of the Ghana Civil Service are some of the problems that have reduced the productivity of members of the service. He has therefore outlined government?s plan to bring back a conducive employment environment in the civil service.

Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom said this at an interactive forum of civil servants from the Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and Eastern Regions in Kumasi. It was part of a consultative process to capture the views of civil servants and all major stakeholders to improve the service. Dr. Nduom said government is committee to tackling and dealing with problems that militate against the smooth operation of the civil service. He added that government has put in place measures such as reducing waste in the system and removing names from the payroll as some of the measures to help improve the living conditions of members of the service. Government also intends to design a comprehensive training and education programme for all levels within the service to help improve service delivery. The Minister in charge of public sector reform stated that his ministry with support from government is identifying problems facing the service through various programmes and what can be done to improve conditions of service and productivity. Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom said a comprehensive human resources database as well as improvement in salaries of civil servants are some of the measures put in place by government to improve service delivery.

Some of the civil servants gathered at the forum mentioned some of the problems that have led to low productivity in the service. They called on the government to take a critical look at their plight to help lift the image of the civil service.
