A driver and his bus conductor (mate) have narrowly escaped death after armed robbers opened fire on a cargo truck on the Bibiani–Goaso highway near Sereso in the Ashanti Region.

The victim, Mohammed Yakubu, 60, was driving a blue-black Mitsubishi cargo truck with registration number AW 621-12 from Akodie towards Kumasi when the incident occurred, just minutes from where Berekum Chelsea FC was recently attacked.

According to a report by adomonline.com on April 14, 2026, an eyewitness said the attackers had blocked the road between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and opened fire as the truck approached, hitting the driver in the abdomen.

“The attackers had blocked the road between 9:30pm and 10:00pm and opened fire as the truck approached, hitting the driver in the abdomen,” the report stated.

An eyewitness, Sampson Dwumah, said the mate rushed to a nearby community to raise the alarm, prompting residents to respond quickly and transport the injured driver on a tricycle to the Bibiani Government Hospital for emergency treatment.

Residents of Sereso say they are living in fear due to repeated armed robbery incidents along the stretch and are calling on the Inspector General of Police to deploy regular checkpoints to improve security.

Authorities are yet to comment on the attack as investigations continue.
