A police officer has appealed to operators of driving schools to focus efforts on helping learner- drivers to have better understanding of road traffic regulations to prevent abuse and impunity.
Police Chief Superintendent Peter Gyimah, the Ashanti Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), said this was critical to ensuring discipline and safety on the roads.
He was speaking at a day’s orientation workshop held for owners of driving schools in the Region in Kumasi by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC).
It formed part of activities by the Commission to reduce road crashes in the region.
Chief Supt Gyimah said it was important for all road users to accept to stick to doing the right things to stop the loss of lives and maiming.
He spoke of the determination of the police to continue to show strong presence on the roads to arrest and bring to justice traffic offenders.
He said their visibility had helped to restore some level of sanity, adding that there was now a decline in car crashes.
Mr Thomas Bismark Boakye, Regional Director of NRSC, said they were combining enforcement and education to fight the driver indiscipline and appealed to all stakeholders to work together to assure both motorists and travelers of their safety.
The driving school owners called for the upgrade of their syllabi by the appropriate state institution to enable learners to successfully pass the written examination of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
They said “what we have been currently working with is outlandish”.
