There is imminent health danger in the New Juaben Municipality of the Eastern region as workers of Waste Management firm, Zoomlion Ltd embark on indefinite strike over six months salary arrears.
According to the workers, several efforts made for management to pay the arrears have fallen on deaf ears hence the decision to sit home.
The brunt of the strike by the Zoomlion workers have began manifesting as heaps of refuse have started engulfing the streets.
Biodegradable waste from markets and stores deposited along the streets are degrading hence unleashing bad odour affecting air quality.
Ultimate News’ Kojo Ansah reported that the workers on strike include drivers and cleaners.
This implies that, household waste will not be collected creating fear among residents.
Residents fear, the strike may lead to outbreak of diseases due to the heavy downpours the Municipality is experiencing this season which influences the rate of waste waste generation and degradation.
The New Juaben Municipal Environmental Officer, Francis Osarfo said the Municipal Assembly is not owing Zoomlion hence has impressed on the Regional Directorate of the company to make everything possible within their means to facilitate contingency measures to mitigate the effect.
Meanwhile, he has called on residents of the Municipality to reduce waste generation and manage waste generated and avoid open dumping.
