Koforidua, Feb. 12, GNA - The Eastern Region recorded 33 deaths throug= h road accidents in January, this year, with 121 others sustaining various degrees of injuries. Police Superintendent, James Sarfo- Peprah, Eastern Regional Commandin= g Officer of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), told the GNA in Koforidua, on Friday, that 21 people were killed and 175 people injured within the same period last year.

He described as worrying, the number of road accidents being recorded in the region despite the numerous efforts being made by the police to chec= k reckless driving by drivers.

Superintendent Sarfo-Peprah said the police would from Saturday, February 12, enforce the Legislation Instruments (LI) 1584, which prohibits heavy trucks to ply the roads after 1800 hours. He said his outfit had assigned police officers to some vantage points in the region to ensure that drivers comply with that directive. Superintendent Sarfo-Peprah cautioned that any heavy duty driver, who violates the directives, would be severely punishment according to the law. He said the measure would help reduce road accident since a greater number of them occur in the night. Superintendent Sarfo-Peprah also cautioned drivers to comply with all the driving rules and regulations and avoid unnecessary overtaking and speeding.
