More than fifty shops at the Techiman Market in the Brong Ahafo region were Monday disconnected from the national power grid by the electricity company of Ghana.

The shops were believed to have connected power illegally.

The move follows a fire audit conducted by the Techiman branch of the Ghana National Fire service which attributed the numerous fire outbreaks in the region to illegal electricity connections.

Operations Manager of the Techiman Fire service Mohammed Abdulai, who spoke to Citi FM on the exercise said the shop owners were warned before the operation was undertaken.

“Two weeks ago, we went to the market with our Commander to do some feasibility studies and we realised that there were a lot of illegal connections in the market that can cause harm to the market.

“This exercise was a team work. We formed a task force with the fire service and we invited VRA so they all came and we went to the market to tackle the illegal connections,” he stated.
