Dunkwa-On-Offin, July 4, GNA - The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has rewarded two farmers at Ayanfuri-Gyaman near Dunkwa-On-Offin for assisting the Police to arrest armed robbers who attempted to steal cable wires belonging to the company.
Mr Akwasi Ahenkan, 47, who received bullet wounds at the lower abdomen, received five million cedis in addition to the payment of his hospital bills of about three million cedis while Mr Osei Kwabena, 32, had three million cedis.
Mr Godfred Kyeremateng, Director of Administration of ECG, who presented the moneys to Mr Ahenkan and Osei at Dunkwa-On-Offin on Saturday, congratulated them for their courage and patriotism and urged all Ghanaians to emulate them.
Mr Andrew T Barfour, Director of Operations of the ECG, appealed to the public to report any cable theft or suspects to the Police or the Company for the necessary action.
In a related development, Mr Benjamin Kofi Ayeh, the newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Upper Denkyira, praised the ECG for providing the people with quality service.
He said called on the people unite and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Nana Otaa Panin III, Dabehene of the Denkyira Traditional Area, also commended the two persons for assisting in the arrest of the armed robbers and appealed to government to provide the Police with additional vehicle to enable them fight crime effectively in the area.
He also appealed to the Government to extend electricity to all communities in the area to facilitate economic activities.
Mr Kofi Afewu, Ashanti Regional Director of ECG in-charge of Ashanti West, told the GNA that the two farmers were returning from farm when they saw the robbers attempting to steal the cables.
He said the robbers opened fire on the farmers and they also return fire and in the process Ahenkan was injured.
He said the police arrested three of the armed robbers and were being kept in prison custody as investigations continued.
