Ho, Aug 10, GNA - Togbe Akliku Ahorney II, the Volta Regional Manager of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), on Wednesday commended the Evangelical Presbyterian Church for establishing Eco-Clubs in E.P schools.

He said such initiatives would build an environmentally cautious generation that would help address the enormous environmental challenges confronting the world.

Togbe Akliku Ahorney said this at a two-day training of teachers’ workshop selected to manage these clubs in the schools.

He urged the Church to extend membership of the club to children in communities so that the project could make a greater impact.

Togbe Akliku Ahorney urged patrons of the clubs to be innovative to sustain the interest of pupils.

“You have to introduce variety of issues like energy efficiency, waste management and forestation to sustain the interest of the pupils and give them recognition and some privileges to keep them committed,” he said.

The Rev Godwin Osiakwa, Clerk of the General Assembly of the E.P Church, said the Church remained committed to helping address environmental challenges.

“We have won several international and national awards for efforts at helping address climate challenge and we hope this Eco-club policy will also help combat the looming environmental and climate catastrophe,” he said.

Reverend Osiakwa said the Clubs would educate pupils to be “friendly to nature and every creature of God.”

“We will let them know the importance of everything around them and make them appreciate the beauty of the eco-system and the need for them not to be destroyed by human activities,” he said.

The Rev Winfred Azornu, the General Manager of E.P Schools, said the idea was to motivate the young to become “environmental ambassadors”, peer educators, and assist elders of their communities through discussions on environmental issues.
