Eastern Region names its streets

Mr. Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, the Deputy Minister for local Government and Rural Development, has expressed gratitude to the Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCE’s) in the Eastern Region for meeting the President’s deadline on the ongoing Street naming exercise.

He said, so far, all assemblies in the Region have completed the piloted areas except some five districts that are facing challenges.

These challenges came about because either they do not have Chief Executives or the choice of names for the streets had degenerated into misunderstanding between the opinion leaders in the district and the assembly and in districts where the pilot areas had to be changed.

He described what he seen as a sign of determination and seriousness adding that the exercise would help the Assemblies in revenue collection and enhance development.

He was addressing the press after a two-day visit to some Assemblies in the Eastern Region to find out the extent to which they have gone with the street naming exercise.

Mr. Vanderpuye said the street naming exercise could help boost the tourism and investment opportunity of the region.

Dr. Owusu Acheampong, the Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben, said the piloted area was more than 90 percent complete though they are still validating existing names with the opinion leaders to get everything right.

Some street names that came up are,’’Baamuhene Street’’,’’Residency street ‘’ and ‘’Legion Link’’.

Mr. Paul Aboagye Dadzie, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Birim North , said the street naming of New Abirem, the district capital had been completed and all ground work had been done for the naming of the properties in the area. He assured that, the process would continue till every town, road and streets in the district is covered.
