Effutu-Awutu-Senya GES asked to do more to promote education

Awutu-Beraku (C/R), Aug. 25, GNA - The Awutu-Senya District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Nuhu Adams, has urged the Effutu-Awutu-Senya district directorate of education to intensify its supervisory role to help promote education in the area.

He said private schools in the area with less qualified teachers are able to produce more qualified students who go to the Senior High Schools whereas the public schools with more trained and qualified teachers cannot attain that standard.

"The secret here is the supervision, and I therefore challenge the Education Directorate to improve upon its supervisory role". Mr Adams said these at the Second Session of the General Meeting of the Awutu-Senya district Assembly at Awutu-Beraku. He said a district without a strong human resource base cannot attain development, and expressed regret that the district is challenged with a high school dropout rate of about 60 percent, with girls forming the majority.

The DCE said the district has a unique institutional set up, made up of about 70 per cent private and about 30 percent public schools. He indicated that a philanthropist had decided to establish a model school at Awutu for brilliant but needy students. "The duty of the Assembly is to liaise with the Ghana Education Service to recruit teachers for the school".

The DCE said the NGO would supply bicycles to the students to enable them to go to school regularly and early.

Mr Adams said the Assembly intends to sponsor more needy but brilliant students to Senior High School, Teacher Training Colleges and other tertiary institutions to improve the human resource base of the district by next year.

The DCE said the Assembly and the GES are preparing packages for teachers who accept posting to the remote areas of the district.
