Eight Bawjiase Anglican JSS students injured in windstorm

Bawjiase (C/R), April 18, GNA - A strong windstorm last Tuesday blew off the roof of the Bawjiase Anglican Junior Secondary School (JSS) injuring eight students in the process.

The victims, six boys and two girls, were rushed to the local Health Centre for treatment. Two of them who received serious injuries are still receiving medical attention at the centre.

Madam Margaret Tettey, Headmistress of the school told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during an inspection of the damage that the school now faces a problem of accommodating the students to continue with their classes.

Madam Tettey expressed concern about the inability of the Awutu-Efutu-Senya District Assembly to roof a block of three classrooms and an office, store, a library and a staff common room, which the assembly had helped to construct for the school about two years ago. She appealed to the Assembly to complete the building for the school to put to use.

Madam Tettey said the school, which runs double stream was conducting some classes under a shed, adding that the disaster had compounded the already bad situation in the school and appealed to the government and donor agencies to come to their aid.

The headmistress expressed disappointment about the attitude of the parents of the victims who felt that since the incident took place during the school hours it was the school, which should bear cost of their treatment.

"So far I have spent 440,000 thousand cedis on the victims but no parent has come to ask about how much I have spent on his or her ward." Madam Tettey said she has also spent 500,000 thousand cedis on the removal of the ripped-off roof from a nearby building on which it fell and the repair of the damaged part of the building She appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to assist in defraying the cost of treatment of the students.
