Daboase (W/R), June 28, GNA - The end of a long-standing land dispute between the people of Mamponso in the Mpohor Wassa East District and Kayireku in the Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira District in the Central Region is in sight. This followed the decision of the two parties and their chiefs to withdraw the case that dates back to 1925 and settle it out of court.

Mr Edward Tawiah Amprofi, the District Chief Executive for Mpohor Wassa East, said this at the first ordinary meeting of the third session of the assembly at Daboase at the weekend. Consequently, a seven-member settlement committee, chaired by the Central Regional Minister had been formed to go into the matter while the two district assemblies share the cost of settlement of the 80-year-old boundary dispute.

Mr Amprofi said to date more than 25 million cedis had been spent by the Mpohor Wassa District on the settlement efforts and that more money had to be spend to ensure final settlement that in sight. He said the dispute between Ghana Fruits Company in Takoradi and the chiefs and people of Mamponso had been settled amicably. Simmering tension between workers of the fruit processing company and the Mamponso community died down when a new Managing Director of the company promised to fulfil its social responsibilities to the community.

On May 11 the people, led by the acting Chief, Nana Kofi Andoh in a letter demanded that the company ceased operation and evacuate all machinery and equipment from the area for failing to fulfil its promise to the people.
