The sea may wash away the entire coastline from Keta Municipality to Aflao in the Ketu-South District, Mr Nir Aharon, Project Manager, Amandi Investment, the firm engaged in the Dzita-Akplo-Torkor Sea Defense works, has said.
He suggested the construction of a sea defence wall along the entire stretch or else the littoral communities including Cape Saint Paul which houses the navigation light at Woe in the Keta Municipality for ships would be lost to the sea.
Mr Aharon was briefing a team of government officials led by Mr Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister, who inspected progress of work on the 2.5 kilometer 60 million dollar project at Atorkor in the Keta Municipality.
Others in the team include Mr Kofi Humado, Minister of Youth and Sports. Mr Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, Deputy Minister of the Local Government and Rural Development and Mr Sylvester Tornyeava, Keta Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
Mr Aharon said it had become clear that the piecemeal defense walls such as at Keta and the current one were proving ineffective as the sea continues to cause more devastation beyond them.
He said the Horvi and Havedzi destruction beyond the Keta Sea Defense Wall was an example.
Mr Aharon said the sea tried to balance itself by creating more destruction ahead of the existing Keta Sea Defence Wall and the one under construction.
“I have never seen the roughness and speed at which the sea causes damage before and the solution is the complete defense” he said.
Mr Aharon said the Atorkor project was entering its second phase during which seven groins would be constructed into the sea, different from the fortress design used at eh first phase.
Mr Amenowode commended the company for the work so far done and urged them on to give of their best to give comfort to the people.
