FDA allays fears of vegetable consumers in Ashanti

Sun, 2 Dec 2012 Source: --

The Food and Drugs Authority says vegetables from the Ashanti region are safe for consumption. They say there is no need to panic since the Food and Drugs Authority is doing its work to ensure the safety of consumers.

This follows a recent survey report that says that health authorities could soon be grappling with a grave public health concern as vegetables sold in Accra markets have been found to contain up to 5000 times the permissible levels of chemical residue.

Nora Tei-Larbi, Director of the Northern Sector of the Food and Drugs Authority, who spoke to Ultimate Radio’s Bernard Buachi, however gives the assurance there is nothing to be afraid of. She urges farmers to avoid bad farming practices such as spraying vegetables a few days to harvesting and mixing different chemicals for the spraying of vegetables.

She also wants the Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural extension officers in the country to intensify education on the use of chemicals for vegetable treatment to empower farmers to do the right thing.
