FIDA organises workshop for Upper East women

Bolgatanga, April 26, GNA-Even though Parliament has effected legislative reforms to promote the rights of women and children in the country, they continue to suffer blatant ill-treatment.

Consequently, the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), has intensified its efforts to eliminate ignorance and illiteracy among women and children intended to protect those rights.

Mrs. Jane Quaye, Executive Director of FIDA, said these at a three-day sensitisation workshop in Bolgatanga at the weekend. It was organised by the association, for women in the Bolgatanga, Kassena-Nankana and Talensi-Nabdam districts of the Upper East Region. The programme was aimed at enlightening the participants on the Interstate Succession Law (PNDC Law 111), the laws on rape, defilement, harmful cultural practices such as widowhood rites, and child rights. The workshop formed part of FIDA's legal aid outreach programme that seek to educate women, especially those in the rural communities on their rights.

Mrs. Quaye said the women would be taken through counselling and laws on marriage, paternity, child custody and maintenance among other issues.

She said: "These legal aid services would provide an avenue for women to access justice, protect their rights and transform their livelihoods."

Mrs Quaye said FIDA had already organised similar workshops in Tamale in the Northern Region and Wa in the Upper West Region to sensitise the public on the rights of women and children.
