Accra Oct. 25, GNA - Gemini Life Insurance Company (GLICO) on Tuesday presented a 100 million cedi cheque to the family of the late Samuel Nii Ayikwei Mankatta, a Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodo Constituency, as part of the Company's life insurance cover for Parliamentarians.
The cheque was presented through the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Ebenezer Sekyi-Hughes to the family led by Mr Henry Laase Mankatta, the uncle and Roland Mankatta and Asafotse Kojo Mankatta, sons of the deceased. This was the third time that GLICO had offered monies to families of two MPs. The two were late Mr C. O. Nyanor, MP for Upper Denkyira and Dr Mohammed Gibrine, MP for Asawaase.
Presenting the cheque, Mr Edward Forkuo Kyei, Executive Director (Technical) GLICO, expressed his condolence to the deceased family and members of Parliament for losing their colleague, friend and father. He recalled the contributions of lawmakers towards nation building stressing "doing your work involves risk which under normal circumstance hampered commitment needed for your work."
Mr Kyei said GLICO Group Comprehensive Plan was put in place for Parliamentarians, Ministers, staff of the Office of the President so that members could go about their duties peacefully and to relieve families during unexpected events.
He explained that under the Company's death benefit, it offered two times the annual salary of person's insured, adding "but on this occasion we decided to round it up to a 100 million cedis to attract other members to join it."
Mr Kyei pleaded with the Mr Sekyi-Hughes to use his medium to encourage the public to cultivate the habit of savings through the purchase of life policies.
"This could be done by granting tax rebate on life insurance premiums "which could also be treated the same way as the Social Security and National Insurance Trust contribution are treated." Mr Sekyi-Hughes commended the role of GLICO noting that some insurance companies took contributions of persons but dragged their feet when payment was due.
Mr Roland Mankatta, on behalf of the family, thanked GLICO for the contribution. The late Samuel Ayikei Mankatta left behind five wives and 14 children.
