Begoro (ER), July 17, GNA - Mr Abass Fuseini Sbaabe, Fanteakwa District Chief Executive, on Thursday announced measures to address the falling standards of education in the area. Addressing the sixth meeting of the fourth session of the assembly at Begoro, Mr Sbaabe said the assembly would establish child protection units, child panels, Centres of Excellence and sponsor as many teacher-trainees as would be required by the District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) each year, to help deal with the situation.

He said teachers' accommodation would also be given attention adding that newly trained teachers posted to the district would be given some financial support to facilitate their settlement. On Health, Mr Sbaabe said the sector would receive maximum support from the assembly.

He said five Community Health Planning Systems (CHPS) Compounds, four of which were constructed sometime ago but abandoned for the lack of furniture, would be worked on and made operational before the close of the year.

The DCE said the assembly would also sponsor a number of students to pursue nursing courses each year, adding that those students would sign bonds and serve in the district on completion of their courses. He mentioned the construction of two-unit classroom blocks each at Salvation Army School at Naama and the Ehiamankyene District Assembly schools (D/A), as some of the development projects for implementation this year with funding from donors. Others include a three-unit classroom block at Nkankama Junior High School (JHS), six unit classroom block each at Besebuom and Lower Bosomtwe D/A, provision of 15 boreholes in 15 local communities, and the construction of Institutional KVIP latrines in three basic schools. Politics Meeting Assembly 2 Begoro On Sanitation, Mr Sbaabe said four solid waste containers had been procured to add up to the existing ones to further improve waste disposal.

He announced that the assembly realised 58,295.54 Ghana Cedis as internally-generated revenue as at May 31 this year, representing 53.77 per cent of this year's target of 108,420.00 Ghana Cedis. Mr Sbaabe was of the opinion that the performance could have been better if the problems associated with revenue generation and mobilization were seriously addressed. He called for prudent measures to improve the revenue performance of the assembly. Mr Sbaabe tasked the assembly members to collaborate with Unit Committees and Chiefs to identify tourism potentials in their electoral areas for development. "It is my belief that apart from the Akrum, Besiboum and Trudu Water falls, Abegogro and the Umbrella Rock, there are more yet to be discovered," he said, suggesting that a Sub-Committee should be constituted within the Assembly to handle tourism. The DCE announced that certain groups and individuals still owed the assembly a total of 14,100.00 Ghana Cedis in respect of Poverty Alleviation Loans, which were disbursed as far back as 2002, and urged the house to take a concrete decision on the matter. 17 July 09
