Dua Police (E/R), Nov. 7, GNA - Twenty-six farmers including four women, received various prizes at this year's National Farmers Day in the Fanteakwa District while nine others received consolation prizes. Nana Frank Yao Boateng, 53, from Mpaem, received the District Best Farmer award, while Madam Comfort Amofa from Begoro, received the District Best Female Farmer award.

The MP for Fanteakwa, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, personally donated a spraying machine to supplement the award of the District Best Farmer who received a bicycle, wax prints, Wellington boots, matchets and lanterns. In an address, the Fanteakwa District Chief Executive, Mr Ebenezer Ofoe Caesar, commended Ghanaian farmers for producing enough food to sustain the economy over the years.

He asked farmers to take the advice of Agricultural Extension Agents for increased crop production.

Mr Caesar asked the people to register with the District Mutual Health Insurance Scheme, which he described as the "best way of receiving medical attention, irrespective of ones financial position."

On the impending December elections, Mr Caesar urged Ghanaians to make it incident-free so as not to plunge the nation into chaos like other African countries.

The Fanteakwa District Director of MOFA, Dr Ebenezer Ghamli, said MOFA was taking steps to improve the irrigation scheme in the district for all year round vegetable production.

Mr Ghamli commended the two banks in the district, the Mumuadu and Atiwa Rural Banks, for supporting the Farmers Day celebration in the district.

The Assemblyman of Onuku/Dua Police, Mr William Dei Agyakwa, appealed to the District Assembly to provide the people in the area with potable water, accessible roads, decent school blocks and a cottage industry to halt the rural-urban drift.
