Farmers in the Upper West Region have expressed their gratitude to the Northern Development Authority (NDA) for supplying subsidized tricycles to support their farming activities.
The beneficiaries were overjoyed as they described how beneficial the tricycles would be for them.
Adams Bashiru, a maize farmer, was unable to contain his excitement and shed tears of joy while recounting the difficulties he faced annually in transporting his farm inputs and in moving his produce during harvest.
He expressed confidence that the tricycle he received would enable him to produce more, saying, "I can now do more with this bike."
"The supply of these motorbikes will aid our farming activities since farming is the only source of employment for us in this part of the country. We will use them to transport our farm inputs and, after harvesting, to carry our produce to our homes and market centers," Mr. Adams explained.
Madam Amina Abubakari, another beneficiary, mentioned that she was always skeptical whenever she heard about such government interventions. However, after receiving the subsidized farm equipment, she became convinced that the interventions were indeed genuine.
Yahaya Napuna, a commercial farmer, told the reporter that the NDA's intervention would significantly assist his farming activities.
Barikisu Amin, an irrigation farmer, noted that the motorcycles were very affordable, adding that she would be able to buy another one after the farming season with the increased production the current one would facilitate.
The NDA recently distributed about 320 tricycles to farmers in the Upper West Region at a subsidized price. The subsidized price is set at approximately 50% of the market price of the bikes, and a farmer can take delivery of a tricycle upon full payment.
The NDA's initiative aims to empower farmers and other commercial tricycle users in their work.
The Northern Development Authority was established by an Act of Parliament in 2017 (Act 963) to provide a framework for the accelerated socio-economic development of the northern ecological zone and related matters.
