Fatal traffic accidents in Agona Swedru reduced drastically from 67 in 2011 to 7 in 2012, the Agona Swedru Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) Commander has said.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr Philip O. Nortey, was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Agona Swedru on Friday.
According to him, total accidents in 2011 were 520 as against 97 in 2012, adding that nine people died in 2012 while 88 died in 2011.
He said 312 and 136 people were injured in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
ASP Nortey, who is also the Agona Swedru Divisional MTTU Commander, attributed the causes of accidents to careless driving, indiscipline on the road and overloading.
He said driving without license, loading under traffic light, driving unregistered vehicles, over speeding were all offences which drivers must try to avoid.
He expressed concern that despite advice given them by personnel of the Unit and the Road Safety Commission officials, some drivers continued to misbehave on the road.
