Fifteen farmers honoured in Ahafo Ano North District

Achina (Ash), Nov.8, GNA- Madam Yaa Anane, 56, a native of Nyamebekyere near Dwaaho, has been adjudged the Best Farmer for Ahafo Ano North District during this year's National Farmers Day celebration at Achina.

She received a piece of cloth, spraying machine, five cutlasses, two pairs of Wellington boots and a certificate for her prize. Mr Akwasi Adu Poku, the District Chief Executive asked the farmers to use the occasion to take stock of their performance and map out strategies to improve on their productivity.

He said the Ministry of Food and Agriculture had supplied 21,000 bags of fertilizer for sale to farmers in the District to boost their cocoa production this year.

Mr Adu Poku appealed to the political parties to conduct their campaigns in peaceful and tolerant manner to ensure the success of Election 2004.

He advised the farmers to register with the District Health Insurance scheme, to enable them have better medical attention. The District Chief farmer Nana Oppong Fordjour who is also the Ashanti Regional representative of the Ghana Cocoa Board, said only few students in the senior secondary schools in the District had the required aggregate to benefit from the Cocoa Farmers' Scholarship Scheme.

Mr William Kwarko Kyei, the District Director of Food and Agriculture, appealed to the farmers to consult Agriculture Extension officers to enable them increase their yield.
