Effia (W/R) April 13, GNA- A refuse dump at the premises of Effia Methodist Junior Secondary (JSS) and primary School in the Western Region is compelling the authorities to close down the school. Mrs Mary P. Ampeh Head teacher of the Primary section of the school told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview on Wednesday that the unsanitary surroundings was interrupting teaching and learning. "The overflowing refuse has blocked water ways in the area and teachers have no choice but to walk through garbage each morning to attend school," she said, adding that smoke emanating from the burning rubbish was too much to bear.
The Headmaster of the JSS, Mr Peter C.K. Ackon also complained about excessive noise from a nearby public cemetery anytime a corpse was being buried.
He said appeals to the chiefs and community opinion leaders to help fence the school had not yielded results. Mr Ackon said the school's management committees had petitioned the Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Directorate of Education, the Ghana Education Service, the Metropolitan Assembly and other stakeholders to come to the aid of the school.
